New PR for my 2nd Pikermi!

CitiGym Halloween Half Marathon 20.59 km 02:28 07:10 pace
New PR and running with VFF at that! It's Phalangging first official Pikermi and we paced with Agz from start to finish. Treated the run as LSD at very chillax pace.... but we are also excited to finish it strong and get a new PR. The weather really cooperated and the route is very nice. Finally met Doc Marc before the start of the race. Members of TeamTytsBogo finished the race with new PRs and a medal to be proud of. Thank you Lord for giving us the courage and the strength to finish the race!

Congrats to all members of TeamTytsBogdo for their individual personal records.

First Unofficial Full Marathon and Beyond!

*First Unofficial Full Marathon and Beyond! 46.15 km 10:31 13:40 pace
Katol and Phalangging's longest run so far. The weather cooperated from the start of the run at around 4:40am till about 10am. We conquered the run from JY Square to Balamban proper with 17 uphills and downhills. Not to mention the 5-km Killer Downhill.

CERC members headed by Sir Ken Casquejo and Sir Raffy Uytiepo shared their water and sweet corn along the way. Doc Alex Junia also gave ice cold bottled water. They were on their way back to Cebu. Bumped with Ultra-Marathoner Atty. Haide Acuna at KM30 -- she ran from Balamban to Cebu.

Caught up with some Ungo Friends at the Columbia Masters Duathlon at KM33. Doc King2x and Adz glad gave their Gatorade while Belle, Coleen and Ace also gave cookiesWe slowly trod some more uphills and downhills.
After reaching KM40, I was already in pain. My left phalanges are so painful while my right calf was like being pinched with 100 needles.
After seeing the 45-kilometer marker, I already had mixed emotions. My legs are so tired and weary. Water is scarce and the sun is still up. I was literally limping while walking at the last 5kms of the run. I was really tempted to ride the habal-habal as the drivers signaled if we are going to ride to Balamban.

I can't imagine myself running more than 10 freakin' hours! But after today's run I can definitely say that I can finish CCM 2011!
Special thanx to Doc Willie, Mommy Twinkle of DepEd, Gabby of Cebu Daily News, Alex, William, TTB Eric, RH Runners Rico and Creas, April and Ate Cora. Tito and 2 other runners went back to Cebu earlier in the run as they have engagements in the afternoon.

What can I say? Pain is temporary! Pride is Forever!

Ungo Runners Think Pink

The Ungo Run last night had a different twist -- same color but with a different taste. Ungo Runners donned their new t-shirts courtesy of Ayala Center Cebu. At the back it says, “Ungo Runners Think Pink”. Yes! We Ungo Runners think Pink not just because it is our official color but it’s also our cause.

Ayala Center Cebu sponsored the Think Pink campaign and is now on its third year. This collaboration is also made possible thru the Rotary Club and Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente and also with the ICanServe Foundation Cebu Chapter headed by Ms. Mary Anne Alcordo-Salomon.  The Ungo Runners were honored to be part of this campaign.

Pre-Run Motivational Spreaker

Raul Cepeda
We had the usual motivational speeches before the run. Our motivational speaker is no stranger in the running community. Raul Cepeda shared his stories about how he gets into being fit and healthy at the age of 77. Yes – 77 freakin’ years! And he’s been drinking papaya juice all this time saying it is his own anti-oxidants.
At 77, Raul Cepeda was the oldest runner to register in the 34th Milo Marathon Cebu Eliminations held last month. He ran a Pikermi! But guess what, he doesn’t want to stop there. He says he will be running his first ever full Marathon come CCM 2011. Amazing!

I Run for Life

Me'anne and Joy
Me’anne Alcordo-Salomon graced the post-run activity and shared her story as a breast cancer patient and her passion in empowering other breast cancer patients now as a breast cancer survivor.  She shared a very inspiring video. See video in this link.

Missing Mom

Watching the video was very heart-warming for me and I’ve been teary-eyed as I get to see the courage of those survivors in the images. Suddenly my Kumpare Boying Milan tapped my shoulder and said, “I ran for your mother…” Indeed, he ran for my mom the late Rev. Sally Villagante in last year’s October Pink Run. Thanx again Boying!

After the activity, I approached Maam Me’anne and shook her hand and said thanks. I had a short chat with her and Ms. Joy Polloso and shared the story about my mom. I thanked them for organizing this campaign.

Photo-ops

Again, of course, nothing can stop the Ungo Runners to smile and be crazy during the pictorials.  And just like in my previous posts, there are only two things that will make the Ungo Runners go crazy or silent: Food and Photo-Ops. Cheers to the Ayala Center Cebu for sponsoring this event and for sharing food courtesy of Max’s Restaurant.

We Think Pink!
Sightings

TTB Rocks!
Members of TeamTytsBogdo were also there to join the campaign. Although we didn’t run and we tagged ourselves as part of the “injured” list, we were still able to make quite a few photos together and just have fun.

TTB Sightings: Richard (our official chauffer for the event); Coach Boying who donned his Milo 42K Finishers Singlet; Christian who always wear that great smile; Bogdonator Eric who can’t get his offense on the sweetytums; KingBogdo Jorge and sweetytums Ramonita; Coleen who was always ready to run and pose at the same time; Richelieu and Katol took part as the PhotoBogdos of the event.

The RH Runners and SK Runners were also there as always.

Think Pink

We shall continue to wear Pink. We shall continue to do our part. As runners, we will be running for life. Next week, all Ungos are encouraged to bring a friend and turn them into an Ungo.  See you there!

Runner's Circle

I ask my friend Mister Google to define the word “Circle” for me. And he came up with several sites. So I checked out Mister Wiki and he says, “In mathematics, a circle generally is the set of all points in a plane at a fixed distance from a fixed point.

A Circle may also refer to a Social circle, a group of socially interconnected people; a Circle pit, a style of dancing associated with ska, punk rock, thrash and heavy metal music. A Circle is a place in Alaska and Montana in the US”.

Moreover, social circles are groups of socially interconnected people. A Social circle is distinguished from a social pyramid in that there are two perspectives that can be used to describe a social circle: the perspective of an individual who is the locus of a particular group of socially interconnected people; and the aggregate perspective of a group of socially interconnected people, such as cohesive blocks.1

But in Cebu, we have the Runner’s Circle. It’s a group of runners who runs every Wednesday night at the Cebu Business Park. The running clinic includes paced group runs, mini lectures, raffles and freebies. The running clinic is organized by Runnr and this is their way of giving back to the running community.

Jerwin Ngo from Nike

After my painful sundown run, I decided to pass the run last night but brought Mikaela instead and be the PhotoBogdo for last night running clinic.

Last night was the 5th series of the running clinic. Jerwin Ngo, product specialist of Nike Philippines, was the speaker and he talked about… well, shoes!

In his mini lecture, Jerwin shared the importance of choosing the right shoes based on the foot type.  Foot type refers to the differences in foot structure and shape. He emphasized on the pronation of the feet as runners may have neutral pronation, overpronation and supination.
SMS Runners after the run

Last night’s running clinic had a special participation from the SMS or the Samahang Mananakbo ng Smart. Maam Grace Ruperto, Smart’s Trade Marketing Manager, gladly gave her business card and asks if I can send her the photos. SMS runners are great bunch of people. They love the running fever as they donned their official blue singlet… and they simply had fun!

Of course, the Runnr’s Circle will not be complete without the photo-ops. As you can see, it is very evident that this one way to make the runners be quiet – by making smile for a group picture.

So run with us! Catch the Runnr’s Circle Running Clinic at the Ayala Active Zone here in Cebu. Who knows you’ll be like Doc Cecille Milan who won a Polar watch. Hmmm…. Nice!

Painful Sundown Run: Crossing 2 Bridges

A repost from my Dailymile account:

Painful Sundown Run: Crossing 2 Bridges :-(    7.26 km00:48 06:37 pace
Was supposed to conquer 3 bridges... but I ended up limping while running from the foot of the 2nd bridge back to my office. I decided to turn left from Total station then head back to the office along Plaridel St. as my right calf was soooo freakin' painful. This is the first time that I tried to conquer the bridges using a VFF. I admit I didn't had a good stretching before this run as I was so eager to have a good head start knowing the sun is always down. I guess I was so excited to start with Week 1 Training. Next time I'll conquer that elusive Cansaga Bridge with Phalangging. Lesson learned: Pain is temporary, pride is forever! haha! Now I'm off to the Runnr's Circle in Ayala. Goodluck to me...
Conquered the first bridge at 14:28.

Conquered the second bridge at 31:58

Taking a shot with my left hand giving a peace sign.
After this shot, I started feeling pain in my right calf :-(.

I think I'm at number 3. :-(

A REPOST FROM JULIE'S BLOG: The Hotlegs Runner: PRODUCT REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: 'KT Tape'

For more info about the KTT, please read Julie's post below or go directly to http://www.hotlegsrunner.com/2010/10/product-review-giveaway-kt-tape.html

The Hotlegs Runner: PRODUCT REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: 'KT Tape': "My very first giveaway! Woohoo! But first, let me start with the review...

What is KT Tape?

KT TAPE is an abbreviation for Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape. It is a strong, elastic athletic tape that reduces muscle pain, increases mobility, and enhances athletic performance. KT TAPE is pre-cut so that it is fast and easy to apply. Just tear off a strip and apply it to the injured area. KT TAPE provides relief and support for muscles and joints and can be used to prevent or treat hundreds of sports injuries.

How Does it Work?

By applying KT Tape over affected tissue, athletes experience an external support which helps to prevent further injury and allows the body’s damaged tissue to rest and heal naturally despite continued activity. KT Tape also reduces inflammation and increases circulation which prevents muscle cramping and lactic acid buildup.

Most of my runner friends know that I've always had a problem with my ankles.  I always feel like a pinching pain in my Achilles tendon and posterior tibial tendon area.  I was able to somehow alleviate this by getting the right running shoes for my gait.  I over-pronate you see. And lately, I've been feeling pain in the heel and arch of my feet.

When I run long distances, I always, ALWAYS feel that familiar pain which I somehow learned to pay no attention to.  Short of saying --- I got used to it.

Not good.

So I chanced upon this sport tape while I was surfing the web and immediately went to the sports store to see if it will work for my me.

Here's how it went down...

I was scheduled to do my long run (19 Kilometers) today, so last night, I asked Mike to tape my right foot.  Yes ---JUST the right one.  Just an experiment.  I wanted to see if there will be any difference between that one that was taped and the one that wasn't.

 Of course it's PINK! :p

And there was!  At 13K my left ankle (no KT Tape) started "acting up."  The  KT Taped right ankle -- still okay.  I was completely PAINLESS on my right ankle until I finished my 21K run.  Yeah you read correctly.  I was just supposed to do 19K but ended up doing 21K!  I still had some energy and my right ankle took me all the way up to a half marathon distance -- pain-free!

I am pleased to announce...Yes, IT WORKED for me!

Real Men Wear Pink

Yeah yeah! Real men wear pink! I recalled this statement when I was still working in Manila from a friend. I was challenged to wear pink which I don't usually do. But since then I am ashamed to wear pink anymore.

But when you wear pink, it means a lot of things. From a website of gems, it says Pink is the color of universal love. Pink is a quiet color. Lovers of beauty favor pink. A pink carnation means "I will never forget you".  Pink provides feelings of caring, tenderness, self-worth and love, acceptance. Put some pink in your life when you want calm feelings, to neutralize disorder, relaxation, acceptance and contentment. (http://crystal-cure.com/pink.html)

I Can Serve Foundation
But for most of us in the health and wellness community especially in the running sport, Pink may define a more personalized care for a family member or a friend who is a survivor or a victim of the dreaded cancer. Pink is usually associated with the month of October.  October has been declared as the month for International Breast Cancer Awareness and it is at this time of the year when citizens of all walks of life come together to raise awareness for the disease.

Coach Boying pacing
with KingBogdo Dindz
Last year, good friend Boying Milan encouraged me to join the October Pink Run but it was just unfortunate that I can't due to schedule constraints. He ran with his race bib saying "I am running for *Rev. Villagante +". His sister's (Doc Tata) bib says "I am running for my own breasts". Those bib statements really made my day.

This year, I intended to run for the October Pink Run but since I wasn't able to register, I decided to bring Mikaela instead and be a PhotoBogdo for the day.  Today's race was basically an Ungo Day! I can say that not just because Ungo's official color is Pink but because the Ungo Runners wanted to run and serve. Yes! We Run and we Serve!

Today's Pink Run is a testimony that everyone can help fight this dreaded disease by raising more awareness to the community.  Runners all over the world unite as one to fight against cancer. But let’s not just end this with a run or merely wearing pink shirts. Let us continue each day to promote cancer awareness and pledge to help those who need our support.

Ungo Runners running pink and feeling the love...
Richelle and Axl | Wonder Colili and Doc King2x | Dindz and Micke

This day is dedicated not just to my mom but also to those who died and survived because of this disease.  May this day be an epitome of living a great life.
Ungo Runners willing to Serve
Kudos to all the organizers headed by the Philippine College of Surgeons, Ayala Center Cebu, Rotary Club  of Cebu Fuente, Run for Sight and the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE).

Jump for Life!
Kudos to all Ungo Runners! We shall continue to shine!

*My mother, the late Rev. Sally Villagante passed away last March 11, 2008 due to complications brought about by the dreaded breast cancer.  She was a dear mom and we missed her so much till this day.
