My Alma Mater, Silliman University will celebrate its 109th Founder's Day Celebration on August 28. While our fellow Sillimanians will have their merry-making in the Campus by the Sea in Dumaguete City, here in Cebu, Sillimanians will celebrate our own by participating in the Silliman Run 2010.
According to family friend Ms. PQ Cafe of Visayas Community Medical Center, the Silliman Run 2010 will be on Sunday, August 22 and will start and finish at the Ayala Terraces. The race have 3K, 5K and 10K distances and the registration is pegged at P250. The runner gets singlet, race bib, a certificate and painit along with photo ops with fellow Sillimanians. This fun run will help raise funds for educational scholarships.
So if you are a Sillimanian or a friend of one, let's run this August. Nikia and I will definitely run for Silliman!
Here's a short fact about my Alma Mater:
Silliman University (also referred to as Silliman or SU) is a Christian private research university located in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Philippines. Established in 1901 by American missionaries, it was the first Protestant and American private school to be founded in the country. The University is named after Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a retired businessman and philanthropist from Cohoes, New York who gave the initial sum of $10,000 to start the school. For the first half of the 20th century, Silliman was run and operated by Americans. After the Second World War Filipinos began to assume more important positions culminating in the appointment of Silliman's first Filipino president in 1952.
Today, the University comprises ten colleges, four schools, and two institutes, enrolling approximately over 8,700 students from different parts of the Philippines and over 26 foreign countries. It is registered as a National Landmark by the National Historical Institute, and is one of few private higher education institutions in the Philippines that have been granted autonomy by the Commission on Higher Education. In a report released by the Professional Regulation Commission and the Commission on Higher Education which covered a ten-year period, Silliman was ranked 4th in the country following three schools of the University of the Philippines. It is also ranked among the top 150 universities in Asia in International Students' Review by the QS Quacquarelli Symonds, an institution that ranks the world's top universities. (from Wikipedia)
